Project Overview

The Background

AhomCX is a crypto exchange platform targeting both retail traders and high-volume professionals. The challenge was designing a complex, data-dense trading interface that felt trustworthy, fast, and learnable — without dumbing it down for power users.

The Problem

Key Friction Points

New users were overwhelmed by trading terminal complexity and abandoned within 90 seconds. Power users felt the layout was too simplified and lacked advanced order controls. The design needed to serve both without compromise.

Key Results & Outcomes

01

New user activation rate increased by 44%.

02

Trading volume up 28% in Q1 post-launch.

03

Power user retention improved by 35%.

04

Support ticket volume related to UI confusion dropped by 52%.

The Design Process

01

Discover

Analysed 5 competitor exchanges (Binance, Kraken, Coinbase Pro) using heuristic evaluation. Interviewed 15 users across 3 segments: crypto beginners, casual traders, and power traders.

02

Define

Defined two primary personas — Alex (beginner, trust-seeking) and Marcus (power trader, efficiency-seeking). Created separate goal trees and frustration maps for each.

03

Ideate

Designed a progressive disclosure model: a simplified 'Basic' mode and a full-featured 'Pro' mode, switchable in one click with persistent preference.

04

Prototype

Built 65-screen Figma prototype covering Basic/Pro trading views, onboarding KYC flow, portfolio dashboard, and transaction history with advanced filters.

05

Test

Tested with 12 users across both personas. Beginners completed a first trade 62% faster. Power users rated the Pro mode 4.4/5 for feature completeness.

Research Insights

01

Beginners listed 'fear of making a mistake' as their top barrier — not lack of knowledge.

02

Power users spent 40% of their time on order management — it needed prime real estate.

03

Trust signals (security badges, 2FA prompts) increased beginner deposit rates by 33%.

04

Mobile trading was a secondary use case — desktop-first was the right design priority.

Challenges Faced

Serving two radically different user mental models on a single platform.

Data density vs. clarity — charts, order books, and trade history all compete for space.

Building trust in a high-risk financial context through UI decisions alone.

Design Solutions

Progressive disclosure — Basic mode hides advanced controls, Pro mode exposes everything.

Designed a modular layout system where panels can be resized and rearranged by the user.

Introduced trust-building micro-copy, security indicators, and clear error states.

Colour system designed around red/green trading convention with WCAG-compliant contrast.
